The History of the Puzzle Game

Of the puzzle games that we enjoy today has a long history. As far as historians can tell number puzzles first appeared in newspapers as far back as the 19th century. In 1892, the kind of puzzle first appeared that resembled the modern game of Sudoku. Almost right away that game became popular enough that it underwent some revisions and soon again emerged resembling very closely the modern Sudoku we see today. Like a lot of other things, entertainment in the gaming world that we once thought was brand new is really something that comes to us from the past and has been refined and passed along from generation to generation.

This early version of the popular game that we enjoy today was popular right up until the beginning of World War I, at which time it then faded away for a period of time but was far from forgotten. According to historians who know about this puzzle game, the modern version of Sudoku can be attributed to a 74-year-old whose passion was to construct puzzles. Howard Garns lived in Indiana and his first published puzzle was picked up by Dell magazines in 1979. It’s unfortunate that this inventor died in 1989 before he was able to see how popular his puzzle had become.

The best of puzzle games always the way of surviving and even ignoring international borders. This was definitely the case for Sudoku which next showed up in Japan. Soon enough the puzzle game was to make a big splash in other parts of Europe like Great Britain, and it became so popular there is some of the major newspapers even reportedly considered running a Sudoku on every page to increase their sales.

It seems strange that Sudoku took such a long time to travel to America where it would gain its biggest popularity, but it wasn’t until it first appeared in a magazine in 2005 that it first attacked the American shore. Of course most of the people who play the game know how quickly it took off once it got to the United States, and the game has been on a steady increase in popularity ever since it was first introduced.

Today you can see people playing Sudoku almost everywhere you go. There are people playing on subways and buses as well as at work at lunch and even after their work is done.
